For about a decade, the current-gen Nissan GT-R has been the most dominant production car in a drag race. For years, there was simply nothing that could keep up with the GT-R. In fact, if you even thought about racing the GT-R in anything other than a mid-engine supercar, you were mad. It wouldn’t work. You’d get roasted and go home crying. However, in recent months, there have been some very fast cars coming out, cars capable of besting Godzilla, even at its own game. A couple of them have come from Audi. But is the GT-R so old now that it will lose a drag race to a couple of big sedans?

In this drag race video from Top Gear, the mighty Nissan GT-R takes on the Audi RS7 and the Mercedes-AMG E63 S. The former has been around a long time and is well-known for being very fast. Its 4.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8 makes 560 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. All of that power is sent through an eight-speed automatic gearbox and Quattro all-wheel drive. Audi claims a 0-60 mph time in 3.2 seconds. As for the AMG, it also uses a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 that makes a simply astonishing 600 hp and an almost silly 627 lb-ft of torque. That unshackled fury is sent through a nine-speed automatic to all four wheels. AMG claims a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds but it’s way, way faster than that. Then, there’s the old-guy, the GT-R. It uses a 3.8 liter twin-turbo V6 with 565 hp and 467 lb-ft of torque. Its transmission is as ancient as the GT-R itself and is a six-speed dual-clutch unit, also sending power to all four wheels. Despite being down on power, the GT-R has the fastest 0-60 mph time, doing it in about 2.8 seconds.

So which will be faster in a straight line?

At the jump, both sedans take off, beating the GT-R off the line. It’s actually remarkable how hard both the Audi and AMG launch. The Audi RS7 actually takes the lead for a bit, keeping ahead of the other two. But the lighter weight of the Nissan and the extra power of the AMG out-muscle the RS7 and finish ahead of it. The GT-R actually ends up winning the race, despite being the slowest off the line. So there’s still some fight left in the old girl.

Still, what’s remarkable is that two genuine luxury sedans, with four doors, seating for four adults, more luxury and technology than anyone could ask for and big trunks, were able to seriously keep up with a supercar-slayer. It’s insane how far automotive performance has come. Check the video out here.
